気候が降水システムの特性をいかに決めるか、全球気候における熱帯積雲対流や降水のマルチスケールの役割、について、熱帯降雨観測計画(TRMM)衛星、静止気象衛星、最新の再解析データを含む気象データ、世界の気候モデルデータなどを利用して研究しています。
 2014年2月末にはTRMMの後継である全球降雨観測計画(GPM)の主衛星が無事軌道に乗り観測を始め、地球上の91%の地域で降水の3次元構造が得られることになりました。気候の変化と共に雨はどのように変わるかを知るためには、降水システムの特徴を決めるメカニズムを理解することが重要です。TRMMの3次元降水レーダデータにより日本周辺や世界の降雨特性についてたくさんの新しい発見がありました。各地の極端降水はどのようなシステムから降るのかについても興味深い結果が出ています。これからGPMのデータが使えるようになり、更にたくさんの発見が期待できます。
 一方で、雄大積雲、積乱雲、雲クラスター、赤道波擾乱、マッデンジュリアン振動(MJO)、ENSOへと、熱帯降水システムを介した、数㎞から地球規模までのマルチスケール相互作用過程の解明も重要なテーマです。100㎞スケールの降雨バンドによる運動量輸送がMJOの構造を変えたり、数千㎞の西風バーストや積雲活動と結びついた大気赤道波がエルニーニョの開始や終了に影響したりと、マルチスケール現象のあちこちに面白い発見があります。
 これらの現象解析から、大気海洋研が他機関と共同で開発を進めている気候モデルMIROCや、全球雲解像モデルNICAMなどのモデル研究への貢献も私達の重要な目標です。
