Abstract
The COP, at its seventh session, requested the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) to develop the technical standards for registries, with a view to recommending a decision on this matter to the COP at its eighth session, for adoption by the COP/MOP at its first session. At the same session, the COP requested the Chairman of the SBSTA, with the assistance of the secretariat, to convene inter-sessional consultations with Parties and experts for the purposes of:

(a) Preparing draft technical standards, for consideration by the SBSTA at its sixteenth and seventeenth sessions;
(b) Providing for the exchange of information and experience between Annex I Parties and non-Annex I Parties as well as the secretariat, in relation to the development and establishment of national registries, the CDM registry and the transaction log.

Inter-sessional consultations on registries will be held on 2-3 June 2002 in Bonn, Germany. This technical paper provides background information to these consultations. Section II contains the results of a questionnaire circulated to Annex I Parties on progress in developing their national registries. Section III discusses possible elements for the technical standards for registries
